Colloquium

The School of the Waves

With Alina Martimyanova and Damian Christinger
19 Sep 2015 | Johann Jacobs Museum

Two pictures mark the start of this colloquium: the monumental woodcut 1912 (2010) by Chinese artist Chen Qi, which we are currently showing in our exhibition Waves, or Book, What Could You Possibly Reveal to Me?, and the Great Wave at Kanagawa (approx. 1831) by Katsushika Hokusai.

While Alina Martimyanova considers the iconography of waves and their changing significance in Chinese art down to the present day, Damian Christinger has taken it upon himself to interpret Hokusai’s (all too) frequently shown woodcut from a Japanese insider’s perspective.

Alina Martimyanova studied East Asian Art and Sinology in Kyiv, Hangzhou and Zurich. She teaches and is a research assistant in the faculty of the history of East Asian Art at the Institute of Art History at the University of Zurich.

Damian Christinger studied the history of East Asian art, art history and read Japanese studies in Zurich and Kyôtô. He works as a freelance curator and writer.
