The Nouvelle Vague and French Indochina

“La 317ème section” (1965) by Pierre Schoendorffer and “Hoah-Binh” (1970) by Raoul Coutard
19 Mar 2019 | Johann Jacobs Museum | FR / EN

In preparation for the conversation with Monika Dommann (March 26) we are showing the films “La 317ème section” (1965) by Pierre Schoendorffer and “Hoah-Binh” (1970) by Raoul Coutard.

“La 317ème section” attempts to reenact the legendary Battle of Diên Biên Phu, which signaled the end of French colonial rule in French Indochina. Yet instead of showing a kind of battle painting, the film uses psychological insight to document the inner and outer dissolution of a scattered company of soldiers. “Hoah-Binh,” on the other hand, is an intimate study of children’s struggle for survival in the Saigon of the 1970s.
