Our conversation is an attempt to define the essential moments and characteristics of a Chinese modernity in the short epoch between the collapse of the last dynasty and the Japanese invasion. On the occasion of the exhibition Moonlight falls into my Study we ask ourselves what this period can teach us about contemporary and future China and its relationship to the world?
